Recap

Here's the story.

A few summers ago my friend Andrea (her myspace page) needed to make some money, so she hopped onto an ice cream truck. She's an excellent flutist but way too interesting of a person to be on the usual career track, so it worked out well for her. She fills cones, makes some dough, and promotes her hip-hop flute playing. The New York Times even wrote a very cool article about her.

Naturally I was totally jealous of her for having the guts to do something so strange. This year she decided to begin building an empire. She asked around for other drivers, and I decided that if I passed up this opportunity I would be an idiot.  I'll help promote Andrea's tunes, and make some cash for myself.  For those of you who don't know me, I'm a professional musician (a bassoonist!) and I'm also working on my doctoral degree.

In the coming weeks I'll be getting my official license, and in the mean time I'll do some ride-alongs with Andrea so I can see how it works.  Artwork is forthcoming, so I'll be printing up t-shirts and whatnot.

Bryan has also decided to get licensed, so that if he goes out to work with me we'll be legit. How sweet! We both intend to post anecdotes on this blog. This should be a fun summer...

  1. omg i love this so much. now that i'm unemployed, i'm going to buy a lawn chair as soon as you have a route, and wait for you every day. maybe twice. ok, twice. i might wear a wifebeater while i'm waiting in the chair. a stained one.

  2. I love this idea SO much and can't wait to hear about the adventures. I know the tales will be great! Best of luck to you, DQ (and I don't mean Dairy Queen, though that does fit...)!

  3. Julian, you are encouraged to think up a "signature" cone for me. I still insist that chocolate soft serve with Bacos will be excellent!

  4. That picture on your profile does not look to Miss Ginger like you are enjoying an ice cream cone! That cone is holding a martini! If you went through my neighborhood selling those from a truck you'd really make a fortune!
Good luck with the truck and the blog!

  5. What a cool blog! Can't wait to read more! Do you ever plan on coming to Williamsburg (Brooklyn)?

  6. Why the hell wouldn't I go to Williamsburg? Just tell me where to go and when. You will have to twirl fire batons (or something) on top of the truck to draw attention!

  7. I'm with Miss G.
If you're sellin' Martooni Ice Cream Cones, then add Smallville to the route. It might be a drive, but I could keep you in business!

  9. This is awesome... If I still lived in the city, I'd be a TBGICT nomad, pitching tents curbside just to get first dibs on the goodness. I think you need to make a trip into the country. Please?!
