Ticket program: Now we're (off) Broadway!

Our ticket give-away program has been going really well. We've turned some people on to music that they might never have thought to go check out, and I'm really proud of this.

The program is taking a little turn this week. I've got a few tickets that I'm going to give away to a play called The Temperamentals. It hadn't occurred to me that I would have theater tickets, but this play tells such an interesting story that I couldn't resist.

The Temperamentals takes place during 1950's Hollywood and the McCarthy Era. Harry Hay and Rudi Gernreich are the central characters; they founded The Mattachine Society, the first gay-rights organization in this country. From the website "Hope Along the wind- The Story of Harry Hay": Given the fearful political climate, Mattachine Society meetings often took place in secret with members using aliases. Like the Communist Party, the organization was organized in a cell structure that was non-centralized so that should a confiscation of records occur only limited information would be available to the authorities.

Obviously we aren't done working towards equality, but we should appreciate we've come a little distance in a short span. I'm eager to see the play and learn more about this era. Here is the New York Times review from when the show had a run last summer.

This giveaway will be conducted a bit differently. Starting Thursday night you'll need to tweet "I want to see @Temperamentals courtesy of @BigGayIceCream." The pair of tickets are not for a certain date, you'll work with the producer to find what works for you. I'll draw a winner Saturday afternoon at 2pm. One entry per account, please- and you need to be a @biggayicecream follower. I'll check! I assign each entry a number and then select by using random.org.

If you don't win the tickets, or if you'd rather go ahead and buy seats, here's a discount offer courtesy of the show's producers. Read up on Harry Hay and The Mattachine Society- it's an interesting tale and we all need to know a little bit about it.
